WC35DESC V1.0 (c) Copyright 1992 by Gary Gesmundo
All Rights Reserved
For Wildcat! 3.5+ ONLY!
What it Does
WC35DESC is a utility program for Wildcat Version 3.5x which will
automatically add file descriptions to the Wildcat database. The
program will add the 60 character short description, kept in the
Files database as well as the extended description. The program
will not currently work with any version of Wildcat prior to 3.5.
How It Works
WC35DESC checks uploaded .ZIP, .LZH and .ARJ files (all others
are ignored) for the presence of a DESC.SDI file. If this file
is found its description is placed in the WC3.5 File database
short description. If the DESC.SDI file is not found and a
FILE_ID.DIZ is present, WC35DESC will place the first line of its
description in the short description. Next a check is made for
the FILE_ID.DIZ file and if present the text it contains is
placed in the extended description. Since this process happens
after the file database record is created, any description en-
tered by the user will be over written.
Installing WC35DESC
1. Ensure that PKUNZIP.EXE, ARJ.EXE and LHARC.EXE may be run
from the WC30 home directory or are in the path.
2. Ensure WCNODEID is set for the node from which WC35DESC will
be run. The WCNODEID is used to determine the path for
storage of temporary files. I.E., in your autoexec.bat or
cat.bat file use the following DOS command: SET WCNODEID=1
for node 1 etc. This is required even if you are running a
single line system.
3. Ensure the current version of WCFILE.EXE is in your PATH or
WC30 Home directory.
4. Put WC35DESC.EXE in the WC30 home directory or in your PATH.
5. Create or add to your existing SCANFILE.BAT in the WC30 home
directory the following line:
WC35DESC %1 /t/n
The /t and /n are optional. The /t option will use todays date
for the file database record and will cause the file to show up
in the new files listing. The default is the files date. The /n
option will suppress the creation of keys in the file data base
record. The default is to create keys from the description.
1
If you change drives or path in your SCANFILE.BAT prior to
executing WC35DESC make sure to change the drive/path back to the
WC30 home directory, i.e. CD\WC30, prior to running WC35DESC.
WC35DESC works with dial up as well as LOCAL uploads and can save
a lot of time entering descriptions. A couple of things to
remember and tell your users are:
1. The short description allows 60 characters max. (DESC.SDI)
2. The FILE_ID.DIZ has been somewhat standardized at 15 lines
of 45 characters each.
Wildcat will accept descriptions longer than 45 characters in the
extended description and WC35DESC will NOT chop off any text
exceeding these limits. Wildcat will only allow 15 lines of
extended description and any lines past 15 will be lost.
Running WC35DESC from the DOS Command Line.
WC35DESC uses the freshen option of WCFILE, therefore
descriptions may be updated by using WC35DESC from the
DOS command line. Following are some sample command lines:
WC35DESC Drive:\Path\Filename.ext
The above command line would update the file database for a
single ZIP, ARJ or LZH archive. You may also use the /n and /t
options as described above. The drive and path are compared
against the entries in the Wildcat FILEAREA.DAT file and must
exist for WC35DESC to work. If no matching entry can be found
WC35DESC will exit and do nothing.
WC35DESC /1
This command would update descriptions for all the ZIP, ARJ and
LZH archives in file area 1. As before use the /t option to set
the file dates to todays date and/or the /n option to suppress
generation of keys from the descriptions.
WC35DESC /ALL
This command would update descriptions for all the ZIP, ARJ and
LZH archives in ALL file areas. As before use the /t option to
set the file dates to todays date and/or the /n option to sup-
press generation of keys from the descriptions.

Although WC35DESC has been carefully tested, I make no warranty
as to its usability, results of its use, or safety to data. I
accept no responsibility for any problems, loss or damages that
occur, whether directly or indirectly, as a result of it's use.
This program is being distributed as PauperWare. If you can
afford to send a contribution please do. $10 to $15 would be a
fair amount. If not enjoy the program in good health and drop
us a line to let us know you are using it. The program may
not be sold, but may be distributed freely providing all files
in the original archive are included.
Many thanks to Phil Pattengale of The Graphics Shop BBS in
Kalamazoo, MI 616-375-2083 1:2201/23 for all the help and ideas!
He was brave enough to be the second system to try WC35DESC. He's
even still using it and is still my friend.
